Blog 10: Self Reflection

(1) How do you think you are doing so far in your senior project and why? AE, P, AP, CR, or NC
Gradewise, I believe that I am in the P range for senior project, because so far I have done everything that has been required.

(2) What one thing do you think you have done well on and why?
My five-minute presentation is something that I have done well. I managed to teach people information about my senior topic while also keeping them engaged in the presentation.

(3) What is one thing you would like to improve on and why?
Right now, I need to work on finding service learning. The service learning is very important to the senior project because it the best way to get someone to learn more and become experienced in their topic of choice.

Blog 9: Science Fair Proposal

1. What is your hypothesis?
If a neighborhood has a high divorce rate, then Girl Scouts cookie will not sell as frequently.

2. Identify the dependant (produced), independant (manipulated) and control variables in your hypothesis.
My dependent variable is the number of Girl Scout cookies sold. My independent variable is the divorce rate in the neighborhood. My control variable will be the Girl Scout cookies.

3. What is the connection between your science fair project and your senior project EQ?
My science fair project is relevant to my EQ (What is most important to success in international business?) because when companies try to sell their products to foreign nations they have to take into account the nations demographics (such as divorce rates) and what they are willing to buy. These companies also have to watch out for changing markets (which are currently changing due to an increase in divorce rates.)

4. How will you perform the experiment? Include the equipment you plan on using.
  1. I'll find the number of divorce rates for every city in Los Angeles County.
  2. Next, I'll collect the number of Girl Scout cookie sales per city in Los Angeles County from the Girl Scouts of Great Los Angeles office.
  3. I'll find different neighborhoods in the Los Angeles County area (one neighborhood with a divorce rate higher than the counties average divorce rate, and one lower than the average.)
  4. I'll then set up two Girl Scout cookie booths (where I will sell the cookies) in popular areas in the different neighborhoods for a set amount of hours.
  5. I will take a count of the cookies that were sold (one for each neighborhood.)
  6. I will then repeat steps 2 & 3 at least two more times in the same neighborhoods that I had picked before.
  7. I will then compare the data I received from both cities and see which one sold the most cookies.

5. Which category will your project be listed under?
Behavioral/Social Science

Blog 8: What I've Learned So Far

 1) What have you learned how to do since you started working on your senior project?

I have gained more knowledge on international business and I have learned the basics such as etiquette and currency exchange.

2) Post evidence of this accomplishment.  It can be in the form of a picture, video, document, etc..

I can now read business magazines and newspapers with ease now that I have picked up the basic jargon.

3) What research helped you to do this and how?
My interviews have helped the most, because they have experienced this stuff first hand.

Blog 7: Independent Component 1 Plan Approval

(1)Write a description of what you plan on doing for your independent study component.

For my independent component I plan to sell either clothes or lotions from my family friends business online either through ebay or a website internationally.

(2) Describe in detail how you think your plan will meet the 30 hours work requirement.

This would take a matter of 30 hours because I'd have to create a profile online with the products I'm selling as well as a "mini-marketing" plan in order to make my product appealing to the market I am planning to sell to. Also handling customers, packaging and shipping goods would take a long time as well.

(3) How does your independent study component relate to your EQ?

This relates to my EQ (which is currently, What is the most important to success in international business?) because business is basically the selling
of goods or service, which is something that I plan to do for my independent component.

Blog 6: Essential Question

(1) What is your EQ?
What is most important to success in international business.

(2) Define the words in your EQ to make sure we are on the same page regarding what your EQ means.
Important - the factor that seems to add to a person success in business the most.

Success - meaning the best possible  outcome in business.

(3) What are some possible answers to your EQ so far?
-Ability to adapt to changing markets
-Constant awareness of different cultures and world news.
-Ability to handle different currencies.

(4) What has been your most important source and why?  Be specific.  If it is a person, name them and what they do, if it is an article, book or video, name the title and author.
-My most important source so far has been The Wall Street Journal. The reason for this is because it constantly gives updates on different successful businesses and the business world, which helps me better understand international business as well as apply the knowledge I gained from my research to real-life situations.

Blog 4: Presentation Reflection

1.  In what way did the first interview affect your presentation?  Please explain, be specific and use an example.
My interview gave me a lot information about the information that I was eager to learn  more about going into the interview, however she also gave me a bit of new information that I ended up focusing on for my five minute presentation. For example, when I asked her if she could give me any suggestions for places in which I could get my service learning done she said that I should talk to any business as long as it is international and not domestic. She then went on to explain the several differences between the two types of businesses. At the time I new that a domestic and international business were different, but I didn't know that the ways in which they trade and handle business had such a significant difference. I found this bit of information to be very important for someone who wanted to learn about business, so I decided to use that as the core of my five minute presentation.

2.  What you say stood out about your presentation performance and why?
My visual was pretty unique from the other visuals I saw from other presentations. The reason for this is because unlike several others my visual supported the information that I shared and was integrated into the overall presentation. Due to this I believe that my presentation was more interactive than a majority of the other presentations.

3.  What was the most challenging to do and why?
The most challenging part of the presentation was organizing the information I had received from my research and interview into a presentation that could be easily understood and interesting to a group of 12th graders that probably didn't know much about business or those who cared little for the subject.

Blog 2: Interview 1 Preparation

The person I am interviewing is Leslye Whittaker. I am interviewing her because I know her very well and she works in the stock exchange at Deutsche Bank in London, England (a form of international business.) She knows quite a lot about international business considering that she has two citizenships (United States and the United Kingdom,) she is very successful in her career, and has done business with several people from different countries.

Additional questions I plan to ask:
-What got you into the profession you are in today?
-What is an average day at your job like?
-Would you be willing to help me on my senior project if I need any help in the future?

Blog 1: Senior Project Topic

My senior project topic is international business. The reason I choose this topic is because I would like to major in international business in college, as well as go into international business for a career. After studying international business all year, I hope to learn more about this topic and see if I'd still want to consider international business for a career choice.
